Bad Ass Women in Bed : Illustrator Kate Worum
Equally cool as she is creative, Kate Worum, a Minneapolis based illustrator,
worked with us to create the sweetest sleepy eye print. We asked her a few questions about
her process and how she gains inspiration. Let's get to know her.
What's your favorite bedtime snack?
K: Pizza + Wine
What's your bedtime?
K: If I don't have a deadline or fun social plans I love crawling into bed early! It just depends on the day. I love a solid nights sleep!
Are you a night owl or early riser?
K: I'm a little of both.
When did you start illustrating?
K : I've made art my whole life, but I didn't start "illustrating" until I got to MCAD. I debated between getting a BFA in Graphic Design or Illustration, and I thought illustration looked a hell of a lot more fun. It seemed more fitting for me. I ended up trying to take as many graphic design classes as I could because people kept asking me, "What the HELL are you going to do with an illustration degree?!" I figured out that there's a lot you can do! You just have to get a little creative and be very flexible.
What did your very first piece look like?
K : I cannot remember my very first illustration... Whatever it was I'm sure it was heinous. A lot of the art that I made back then was just learning different mediums. I think to be an illustrator you have to make a ton of horrendous work until you start to find your style/voice.
How / Where / Who do you gain inspiration from?
K: Pretty much everywhere, but mostly from collaborations with other creatives. When I am in a rut (aka not knowing what the hell to make) I prompt myself with a project. Right now for example, my friend Ashley Shulzetenburg - a trend forecaster here in MPLS - and I just kicked off weekly illustrated trend alerts. Just to stay inspired, make, and to have a much needed outlet where there are no rules but our own.
What is the coolest project that you have been involved in since starting to freelance and why?
K: This is tough... Working with the Man Repeller was pretty fun!
If you could have a super power what would it be?
K : Math and cooking skills. JK, I'd want to have the power to heal.
What are key things you do to keep a work / life balance?
K : Since I've been freelancing I have been finding it very helpful to get everything on the calendar. When I sit down to make a to-do list for the week I include my personal plans and try to make them equally as important as everything else.
What is a must-have for the perfect night sleep?
K : A ton of pillows! And my man Dan next to me. He seems to always have "a perfect night sleep." He sleeps like a baby angel on his back. He falls asleep in 5 seconds and it usually takes me about 15-20 minutes. #sleepgoals
What does your coffee order consist of?
K : I love an iced latte in the summer and a hot cappuccino in the winter.
If you could trade places with anyone for the day - who would it be?
K: Lake Bell. I think she's even weirder than I am and I just want to see what that could be like.
